    • This winter, Sea to Shore began collecting photoID data for manatee use at Welaka Spring, a spring that has not been monitored since the early 1990s. Welaka is located south of Palatka along the St. Johns River and is approximately 54 miles from Blue Spring.  We have deployed temperature probes around this small spring to get an idea on how sustainable of a warm water source this spring might be for manatees during a winter season. Upon our third and fourth visits to Welaka Spring on November 20 and 21, we saw an old friend, Rocket.  He was with a minimum of 17 other animals, looked good and so big :). This was an exciting discovery since we knew from Wayne Hartley's manatee "roll call" counts at Blue Spring that Rocket was a late arriver there but we had no idea where his alternate warm water site was before his Blue Spring arrival.  Wayne called on December 11 with the news that he’d documented Rocket at Blue Spring on November 28. How exciting that Rocket, a rehab animal rescued as an orphan calf from Blue Spring, found an alternate warm water site so far away and still makes the trip back to Blue Spring.
