Myakklemore is a male manatee rescued on January 17, 2014, because of cold stress and because he had been orphaned.  At rescue he weighed 216 lbs and was 173 cm long.  He was rescued from the Myakka River in Sarasota County and brought to Lowry Park Zoo for critical care, then transferred to South Florida Museum to continue to grow and gain weight.  In a health assessment in November 2015 he had grown to 249 cm long and weighed 730 lbs.  He was released at the TECO power plant in Tampa on January 29, 2016, and will be monitored through the winter by Sea To Shore biologists until spring 2016.

    • After Myakklemore did not respond to the cold front the second week of February and remained in the Hillsborough Bay area by himself, there was concern that he was at risk for cold stress.  A visual obtained on 2/13/16 showed indications of cold stress on his face, and with daily observations through the weekend the indications of cold stress increased enough to warrant an intervention.  A capture was successfully completed on 2/16/16, but unfortunately Myakklemore died during the rescue.  The cause of death was determined to be cold stress.

    • We attempted to track Myakklemore this morning, but he had traveled into the restricted zone just outside the air force base.  We were not able to get permission to be escorted into the area for a visual.  We'll try again this week once he leaves the restricted area.

Data map is currently not present for Myakklemore.
